The Founding Myth of Europe contemplated at sunset at the beach of Matala. Fine Art Photography by Zbigniew Halat. Greek mythology: when Zeus seduced the Phoenician princess Europa (whose name has been applied to the continent, Europe) in the form of a white bull, he crossed the sea and brought her to the beach of Matala. There he changed into an eagle and flew her to Gortys and they had a sexual intercourse under a plane tree (platanus), a tree that may be seen today in Gortys. Following this affair three children were born, Minos, Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon, who became the kings of the three Minoan Palaces in Crete. The identification of Europa in this myth gives weight to the claim that the civilization of the European continent was born on the island of Crete.

Flag of Greece at the beach of Matala: the cross symbolises Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the nine stripes represent the nine syllables of the phrase "Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος" ("Freedom or Death") or the nine stripes symbolise the nine Muses, the goddesses of art and civilisation. Karmel, Carmelite Monastery, Karmelittklosteret “Totus Tuss” Order of Discalced Carmelites, O.C.D. Barefoot Carmelites, Tromsø, 350 kilometres (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle, Norway, Norge. Fine Art Photography by Zbigniew Halat. The Carmelite Order was born of a gesture made by a group of friends who had fought and suffered together for months, perhaps even years, in the wars to regain and defend the Holy Land. They had fought for Christ and now decided to go the whole way and devote their lives wholly to him. So they settled on the western slope of Mount Carmel, determined to live in obedience to him after the fashion of the monks of old who in the solitude of the desert sought to live the Christian life to the full in imitation of Jesus Christ.
